It always makes me smile when a well to do lady - A friend's mother or nicely perfumed boutique owner or some other such woman - tells me how "interesting" my style is and asks where I buy my clothes or jewelry. The gushing praise that follows when I admit to making or altering them myself is amusing in a way...

Because these sweet women always end up asking me: "How did you even think to do that yourself?"

My answer?

"Well... I'm like, really broke."

Which gets a big laugh. Maybe because it's so brutally honest. Maybe they think I'm kidding. Either way, I don't mind at all. "Broke" is not a sore subject for me. Sure, it can be stressful... but some of the greatest moments in my life came from having an empty bank account.

My designs aim to be nothing more than celebrations of those experiences.

Realizing that there's only 68 cents left in your bank account and laughing with your husband about what "ballerz" you are. Because, who cares? Bills are paid. Kids are fed. You have everything you NEED. Why stress over what you WANT all the time?

Driving to Florida for Spring Break a back pack full of bathing suits and sleeping in your Volkswagen Beetle in the beach parking lot because you can't afford a hotel.

Spending three hours rolling 25 dollars worth of pennies with your college roommate to afford an impromptu road trip for dinner in New Orleans.

Singing radio jingles for local businesses in exchange for months of free food.

Dressing up in cocktail attire with your best friend so you can hang out at the fanciest restaurant in town and giggle when rich men sitting at the bar send you both a dozen oysters and a bottle of French champagne.

Shoveling hay out of a barn in Sealy, TX for a family that raises Llamas so you can make 100 bucks to pay your water bill.

Being broke makes things interesting. It forces you to think outside the box. It lends to a creativity that you may not ever experience otherwise. And for me, that creativity most definitely bled into my fashion sense. I am addicted to clothes, jewelry and other accessories... but I haven't always been able to afford that habit. So instead of using money I needed for groceries to buy clothes like I did in college, I started making things or altering things I already owned. I was surprised at how many people asked where they could get the things I was wearing.

So now, I'm spreading the love. These designs represent who I am and the things I've been through. I'm not "technically" broke anymore due to my husband's adult-person job. However, we have four children between us... so that generally leaves a 0 dollar budget for clothes shopping. But rather than just make things for myself, I've decided to make them available to other people as well. Maybe there are those out there who will find a little piece of themselves in this collection as well.

So if you're broke, whimsical, unique, eclectic... and hey, maybe even a little bit weird... stay a while and look around! Celebrate who you are and what your life is like. Your clothes don't have to pretend to be "rich" to be awesome...

And neither do you.
